Buttermilk Syrup

1 C. sugar
1/2 C. buttermilk
1/2 C. butter
1/2 tsp. soda
1 tsp. vanilla

Bring sugar, buttermilk and butter to a boil, then remove from heat and add soda and vanilla. If made in advance, reheat just before serving and add soda and vanilla right before use. The soda loses it's "flair" after sitting. Also be sure to use a pan twice the size of the liquid in it.

Alterations: You can substitute heavy whipping cream for the buttermilk. Add less sugar and 1 cup of cream.
